Member Spotlight: Smith & Solomon Commercial Driver Training

Oct 3, 2022

Founded in 1999, Smith & Solomon and its affiliate schools serve individuals seeking DOT compliance training, forklift training, and CDL training at eleven locations across the Northeast and Midwest. The business has been a CVTA member for over 12 years and exemplifies the high standards the Association expects from our members when designing curriculum, serving their community, and preparing their students for employment on the road.

One unique aspect to Smith & Solomon is the fact that their business has remained centered on CDL training throughout changes in the industry. Many similarly situated businesses adapted their business models to include other components of training, but John Diab, one of the school’s owners, explained that it was important to them that they never lost focus and kept working on what he feels is their biggest strength in the industry. In addition, despite property prices sky-rocketing, raising rent for businesses where real estate is precious, Smith & Solomon has maintained a presence in cities like Philadelphia where they feel the community needs the service they provide.

When asked about the approach he takes to business, Jim Bennett, Director of Regional Operations, explained that he tries to remember to always stay patient with his students. Many of his incoming trainees are in their late thirties or early forties, meaning folks in the program have likely not been in a classroom setting for upwards of twenty years. It takes time to adjust and acclimate to an academic setting, but the initial culture shock can often be overcome with right training and instructors.

John Diab explained that their approach to business is very simple: They focus on what they are good at and do it well. As most of the upper management team have been with them for over fifteen years, they believe in the practice of treating the staff well by extending respect and continuity. They also always put their students first and never sacrifice safety.

Despite economic ups and downs, industry changes, and ongoing regulations that have burdened small businesses like Smith & Solomon, the school continues to be a thriving part of the communities in the locations they serve. When asked if he enjoyed his work, Jim Bennett noted that he was often able to take someone who was underemployed or unemployed, teach them an important trade, and help them find employment with a high starting salary. It’s life-changing for many folks who go through the program, and there are few jobs that provide such a direct rewarding outcome.
