Senate Introduces Legislation Allowing 529 Accounts to Pay for CDL Training

Apr 6, 2023

It has been another busy week for Government Affairs at CVTA. This morning, CVTA Government Affairs Director Kyle Hayes met with the staff of Senator Mike Braun (R-IN) to discuss a new bipartisan legislative proposal that would allow people to use 529 Plans to pay for CDL training.

You can watch a video update on this morning’s meeting here:

529 Plans are tax-advantaged savings accounts that have traditionally been used to help parents save for their children to attend colleges and universities.

But with the increasing number of jobs available without a college degree, and the debt that comes along with it, it is encouraging that Congress is considering broadening the uses of 529 Plans to include skills training like CDL training.

We’ll have more updates as this and other CVTA legislative priorities advance through Congress.
