Stevens Transport Incorporates Innovative Solutions that Reduce Fuel Consumption by 6.6 Percent and Idle Time by 48 Percent

Bloomington, Minn., Aug. 2, 2011 – Leaders at Stevens Transport, an eco-conscious, refrigerated transport carrier headquartered in Dallas, have applied innovative thinking to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Using a variety of solutions that include fuel management efforts, new technology and a proactive driver training program, Stevens has decreased its fuel usage by 6.6 percent and idle time by 48 percent.

The company, which offers over the road, intermodal and logistical solutions within the continental United States, Canada and Mexico, has also incorporated a program to refurbish refrigeration units which allows them to keep certain equipment in service twice as long, helping reduce their environmental footprint. Stevens Transport leaders are committed to environmental initiatives, and they meticulously manage their efficiency and sustainability efforts.

Several factors motivate the sustainability efforts undertaken by Stevens Transport, including the need to control rising fuel costs, which are currently one of their largest expenses. Company leaders addressed this by analyzing fuel burn against engine run and idle time reports.

Their research discovered large variances among their fleet of drivers. In response, Stevens outfitted their entire fleet with Thermo King Tri-Pak auxiliary power units (APUs) to address the variances and to enable idle time reduction of 48 percent.

Stevens Transport undertakes many energy-saving and sustainability efforts which reflect their environmental philosophy, such as clean idle engines, auxiliary power units (APUs), energy-efficient refrigeration units, aerodynamic trailer skirts, oil recycling, fuel efficient tires, tire retreading and continued training. Overall, their efforts have reduced the fuel consumption of their 2,000 tractors and 3,000 refrigerated trailers by millions of gallons while paving the way for future improvements.

This week, leaders from Thermo King, a manufacturer of transport temperature control systems for a variety of mobile applications and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, will recognize Stevens Transport with the Thermo King Energy Efficiency Leader Award. The award recognizes Stevens Transport for their commitment to energy and operational efficiency.

Stevens Transport identifies customized solutions
Stevens Transport also implemented a replacement program to take well-maintained APUs off tractors that have reached the end of their service life and to recycle them on new tractors. The APU generates environmentally conscious power while heating or cooling the cab without idling the tractor engine.

Even before Stevens Transport introduced the refurbishment program, they significantly increased energy efficiency and lowered exhaust emissions by adding APUs to the company’s entire fleet in 2010.

The company originally committed to installing APUs for direct efficiencies they could gain as well as to help retain drivers. “A well-rested driver typically operates a vehicle in a more efficient and safe manner,” said Aaron. “Although having the right equipment is important, the driver still plays a pivotal role in fuel consumption.”

With ongoing safety regulations and limits on the number of hours drivers can operate put in place by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Stevens Transport has found that drivers have responded positively to the use of APUs.

Stevens Transport has further increased operational and energy efficiency with OptiSet™ Plus, a customized temperature control system. This solution uses controls that run refrigeration units only as needed to precisely control temperatures. Use of these controls protects cargo and reduces engine run time, emissions and costs.

This temperature control solution offers more than 500 preset temperature options and streamlines product decisions in advance. Fleet managers and drivers can collaborate to identify a tightly controlled temperature range based on the products commodity to yield more consistent product quality and more efficient refrigeration.

Sustainability efforts have also included a driver training program that diligently informs them on system capabilities so they can use the technology to its fullest. The company offers a driver fuel bonus program to reinforce efficient equipment operation.

Moving forward, Stevens Transport leaders are testing un-tethered two-way communication applications to increase research by monitoring trailers and refrigeration units. They are also evaluating trailer pre-cooling, correct operating modes for refrigeration units, proper product temperatures for cargo and options for minimizing fuel theft.

RIDE OF PRIDE TO HONOR VETERANS - Schneider National

Jeff Edwards, a London, Ky.-based driver for Schneider National, has been chosen as the driver for this year's Ride of Pride. Edwards, who has worked at Schneider since 2006, served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 12 years, and was called to active duty in Iraq in 2003. "It is a special honor to be able to drive this truck and to support those in the Armed Forces," said Edwards, "and to work for a company that is so supportive of the men and women who serve their country through military service."

Covenant Transport – 25 Year Anniversary Celebration

Covenant 25th AnniversaryOn My 17 & 18, covenant Transport gathered to celebrate its 25-yearanniversary. The company held a reception after the annual shareholders meeting to honor the 2-year employees, which include James Burklow, R.H. Lovin Jr., Mike Owens, David & Jacqueline Parker, Clay Scholl and Stan White.

The celebration continued the next day with a 1980’s celerity and each department was invited to decorate heir space in an 80’s theme. A luncheon was held for all employees and 25th anniversary t-shirts were distributed. In addition to the corporate office celebration, each terminal hosted a luncheon for the drivers.

The company gathered to not only celebrate the outstanding contributions of these individuals, but also the many milestones achieved by the company. David Parker founded Covenant Transport at age 28 with his wife, Jacqueline, and has worked to make it into a$600 million-a-year corporation.

“It’s been a long, hard, joyful, wonderful, emotional ride for the last 25 years,” David Parker said, reflecting on the milestone achieved by his company.

WERNER TO DEBUT PROPRIETARY TRAILER SKIRT ON EARTH DAY

To commemorate Earth Day, Werner Enterprises will showcase its green initiatives on Friday, April 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include an in-depth look at Werner Enterprises’ “green” truck and trailer, educational booths from the company and OPPD, and tips from horticulture, gardening and energy conservation experts. At 11:30 a.m., Derek Leathers chief operating officer of Werner Enterprises and president of Werner Global Logistics, and Steve Phillips, senior vice president of operations, will discuss the company’s sustainability initiatives.

In an effort to further reinforce Earth Day’s message, the company will raffle off trees and distribute seed packs to associates during the event. In addition, the new Werner-developed SmartWay-certified advanced trailer skirt (estimated fuel savings 5 percent) will be on display. The skirt is designed to minimize aerodynamic drag and maintain smoother air flow by reducing the wind under the trailer. Obituary - Ron Lee Geyer, 63

Ron GeyerRon Lee Geyer, age 63, of Columbia City, IN and formerly of Florida passed away at 9:43 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City. Born on July 2, 1947 in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Raymond Evan and Eldora Marie (Bieberich) Geyer.

He graduated from Churubusco High School with the Class of 1965, International Business College, Fort Wayne, and Miami Dade Community College, Miami, FL. He worked at Geyer Willow Grass Sod Farm, Collins; he then drove truck for Dana Corporation, Inc.; and currently he was employed as a field recruiter for U.S. Express, Chattanooga, TN. He is a member of American Legion Post 90 and Elks Lodge for 25 years, both at Cape Coral, Florida.

Survivors include his sister, Myrna (Ralph) Bailey of Columbia City; best friend, David Johnson of Cape Coral, FL; 2 nieces, Diana (Kim) Hare and Lisa Peppler; 2 great nieces, Shelby and Kayli Hare. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside service will be at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Eel River Cemetery, rural Churubusco with Pastor Terry Zolman officiating. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to DeMoney-Grimes Funeral, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City.

Memorials may be given in memory of Mr. Geyer to the Whitley County Humane Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Truck to the Future - Co-founders Fuller and Quinn reflect on 25 years of US Xpress

To hear Patrick Quinn and Max Fuller talk about the good ole days of the company they founded 25 years ago is to recall a world that has continually receded in the rearview mirror. Gone are some of the old trappings of trucking as these leaders and their company have ridden—as well as have directed themselves—many of the waves of change within this industry.

For instance when co-chairmen Fuller and Quinn began U.S. Xpress operations with 48 trucks in 1986, the guesstimates on how far a given driver was from his destination have long ago yielded to geo-tracking and real-time satellite communication. “You were right most of the time,” Quinn said of those early days. “But it took a lot of intuitive knowledge.”

Today, when Quinn talks with Tennessee Trucking News about the grease boards on which dispatchers used to update daily the whereabouts of each truck, he might as well be talking about the cave paintings of Lascaux.

“Amazingly, it worked probably 98 percent of the time because people did do what they were supposed to do,” Quinn said. “You knew the driver. You couldn’t verify; it wasn’t Ronald Reagan, ‘trust and verify.’ It was simply trust. You think of going from that to where we are today.”

Twenty five years later, U.S. Xpress is the second-largest privately-owned truckload carrier in the nation, with revenues in 2010 in excess of $1.6 billion. Over the past decade, U.S. Xpress—with a networked fleet of 8,500 trucks, 22,000 trailers and employment of more than 10,000 employees nationwide— has diversified from the traditional long-haul and expedited truckload carrier model. In addition to regional, dedicated and expedited truckload operations, U.S. Xpress is involved in intermodal, logistics, brokerage and even international business with border crossing into Mexico. The U.S. Xpress customer list—with names like Walmart, Home Depot, Target, etc. – is as impressive as anyone’s anywhere. “We’ve kind of got the who’s-who of the Fortune 500,” Fuller said. “We pretty much ship for them all.”

The two men who split the top billing at U.S. Xpress have their specialties: Fuller is the operations and equipment maven; Quinn has seen the country making house calls to customers. Along with providing the vision and leadership that has continually brought operational efficiencies, safety improvements and enhanced levels of customer satisfaction to the industry, Fuller and Quinn have been at the forefront of innovation, adopting technologies that allowed their employees to utilize the best available tools....
