Swift Announces Ranked Driver Quarterly Pay Bonus

Swift Transportation will soon start awarding ranked company drivers a new Quarterly Performance Pay bonus of up to 6 cents per mile.

Swift company drivers are currently ranked based on their safety, service and productivity level. This new program begins on July 1, 2012, and bonuses will be paid at the end of each fiscal quarter to ranked drivers who are employed the entire quarter.

The new Quarterly Performance Pay is in addition to the current pay and motivates drivers to improve their ranking through focused attention to safety, on-time service and miles driven, the company explains. The higher the driver's rank, the higher the Quarterly Performance Pay will be. Based on the driver's performance, they can earn up to 6 bonus cents per mile - if they have achieved superior performance for an extended period of time.

The program is designed to reward driver performance that helps the company achieve its goals. The cost of the quarterly bonus is expected to be approximately 1 cent per company mile - without taking into consideration the positive impact from further improvement in productivity, customer service and safety.

"As you can see from this new plan, we are serious about retaining and rewarding the best drivers in America," says Richard Stocking, president and COO.

ESGR Honors Schneider for Commitment to Military Members

Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) chooses the Big Orange for Extraordinary Support of the Red, White and Blue

GREEN BAY, Wis. - (June 27, 2012) - The national Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) has chosen Schneider National, Inc., one of the nation's most decorated employers of current and former military personnel, as its first-ever recipient of the Extraordinary Employer Support Award.

Criteria to win the award included having five years or more of sustained excellence in supporting National Guard and Reserve troops. Eligible recipients were also required to have had the honor of earning the Freedom Award, a distinction Schneider achieved when the Secretary of Defense presented the inaugural award in 1994.

"It's very special to receive recognition for something we've not only been practicing for decades, but for a mission we're truly very passionate about," says Mike Hinz, a vice president at Schneider and a retired member of the U.S. Army and Reserve. "We're proud to be providing great jobs to both current and former members of the military."

Hinz remarked that Schneider, one of the nation's largest truckload carriers, understands what makes military members successful drivers and transportation professionals at Schneider. "We know what current and former military members are going through," he said. "They're wondering, 'Is what I decide to do next ever going to compare to my meaningful, exciting and diverse work in the military?' For me, to be able to complement or extend a career to those individuals at Schneider is fulfilling because I know firsthand how dynamic and meaningful the work here is. That feels good."

ESGR recently honored Schneider National with a reception at Joint Force Headquarters in Madison, Wis. In attendance were Jim Rebholz, national chairman of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, Maj. Gen. Don Dunbar, adjutant general of Wisconsin, and Richard Vallin, Wisconsin ESGR chair, among others.

"I had to smile, because we just celebrated Schneider's 20th anniversary of commitment to military members," Maj. Gen. Don Dunbar said. "I think if you looked up 'employer support to military members' in the dictionary, you'd see a picture of Schneider National right there."

Rebholz added: "Schneider National's longstanding commitment to giving back to current and former military members is indisputable. It's refreshing to see a company that is so genuine about its purpose and serves as a role model for other companies out there."

Supporting the Red, White and Blue
In May Schneider pledged to hire 650 military veterans throughout the U.S.
in 2012. Schneider also works extensively with the transportation industry, government officials and Veterans Affairs to improve and streamline hiring procedures for current and former military members. Over 21 percent of Schneider's hires currently serve or have served in the military.

Schneider was also recently named a Most Valuable Employer for MilitaryR Finalist on CivilianJobs.com's Annual List for the second consecutive year.
The company was the only truckload carrier on the list. Moreover, 2012 marked the sixth consecutive year Schneider National was named to G.I. Jobs' Top 100 Military-Friendly Employers List.

Last year the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) accepted Schneider into its exclusive Apprenticeship Program. During their first year at Schneider, veteran drivers are eligible to earn a monthly educational benefit check from the VA in addition to their paycheck - up to $1,069 each month depending on the number of years of service.

Other military-specific benefits Schneider offers include guaranteed home time for weekend drill and annual training for Guard and Reserve members as well as extended benefits and differential pay during deployment.

Schneider has been selected by Freightliner for the Ride of Pride

Schneider National Receives Freightliner’s 10th Edition Ride of Pride Truck Newest Addition Makes Schneider the Only Fleet With Five Rolling Military Tribute Trucks

Green Bay, Wis. June 21, 2012

Schneider National, the premier provider of truckload, intermodal and logistics services, has been a proud supporter of the United States military since the company’s founding in 1935. Last month, the company added another tangible expression of that pride to its fleet when Freightliner Trucks presented its 10th edition Ride of Pride truck to Schneider. The new military-themed tractor joins the 2007, 2008 and 2011 Ride of Pride tractors, plus the only Canadian Ride of Pride ever produced. This makes Schneider the only company with five of the specially decorated vehicles, which feature decals representing members of the military, their families and their sacrifices.

ROP_Two_Drivers.jpg

Two special trucks and their very special drivers:
Russ O'Dell (pictured left and standing in front of the 2012 truck he drives)
and Greg Roberts (pictured right and in front of the 2011 truck he commands).

“These trucks and drivers represent those that have served and sacrificed for our freedoms,” notes Mike Hinz, vice president at Schneider. “We are honored to add our fifth Ride of Pride truck to the fleet and proudly represent America’s heroes.”

Freightliner’s Ride of Pride tradition began over 10 years ago when Ed Keeter, Freightliner shift manager and Vietnam War veteran, proposed the project as a way to honor current and prior members of the U.S. military. Originally, Keeter and colleagues planned to simply decorate a truck to take to the local Veteran’s hospital near Freightliner’s truck manufacturing plant in Cleveland, N.C. Freightliner employees embraced the idea so wholeheartedly that it quickly became part of a national effort that includes participating in the annual Ride for Freedom, a procession through Washington, D.C., each Memorial Day. Freightliner also decided to award each year’s Ride of Pride truck to a different trucking company and decorated the cab for the chosen fleet with military-related decals.

“Freightliner Trucks has a long partnership with Schneider, and we have welcomed the opportunity over the past 10 years to together celebrate and pay homage to the men and women of our armed forces,” said Mark Lampert, senior vice president, sales and marketing for Daimler Trucks North America. “Veterans hold a special place within both organizations, and we’re proud of the drive and spirit behind the Ride of Pride program.”

When Freightliner awarded the sixth truck in the series to Schneider National in 2007, the company first intended to use it to haul freight. However, it was soon clear from the impact it was making upon drivers, associates and the motoring public that the truck was meant for a different purpose.

“We started offering the truck to various military-related events and activities across the country and selected a driver from our ranks who possessed a military background to serve as its captain,” recalls Hinz. “The response the truck and driver got at these events was phenomenal, so when we received the 2008 and 2011 trucks, we knew we had to reserve the newest tractor solely for meaningful ceremonial duties and appearances.”

The Schneider driver recently selected as the 2012 Ride of Pride driver is Russ O’Dell of Clarksville, Tenn. O’Dell retired from the Army in 1999 after spending many years living in countless places across the country and globe as a scout and drill sergeant. In 2007 he joined Schneider as an over-the-road driver. When the Army asked him to return to serve as a recruiter, O’Dell took a leave of absence to assist before returning in 2010.

“I’ve only been with the Ride of Pride a few weeks, but it’s already clear to me that the best thing about driving it is the opportunity I get to meet so many current and past military members,” says O’Dell. “The response they have when they see the truck is truly awesome, and that special connection makes me feel so honored and privileged to be in this role.”

Because of high demand for the Ride of Pride’s presence at events this summer, the 2011 truck will continue to make public appearances until September. Driver Greg Roberts of Eastpointe, Mich., sits at the helm of that vehicle. Roberts, like O’Dell, retired from the Army after 20 years of service. He joined Schneider in 2004 and drove on a Dedicated account until his selection as the 2011 Ride of Pride driver.

“It’s hard to explain how much it means to me to be the 2011 Ride of Pride driver,” says Roberts, who served in Operation Enduring Freedom and was rapidly deployed to Afghanistan in the months after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. “I’m just so proud to be in this position. There’s not a day that goes by that someone doesn’t follow me into a truck stop or ask to take a picture with it. I ask myself, ‘Is it really going to be this great every day?’ And I know the answer is ‘Yes.’”

Through the years, Schneider National has developed a number of programs specifically for current and former military personnel, including its Military Apprenticeship Program. This program provides a smart way for military members to use their Veterans Administration (VA) benefits. Through the program, military members are eligible to earn up to $1,069 per month in VA education benefits in their first year, in addition to their Schneider pay checks.

Schneider has consistently been recognized as a national leader in supporting current and former members of the military and has received numerous national, state and armed service awards. This year alone, Schneider National was named to G.I. Jobs magazine’s annual list of Top Military-Friendly Employers for the sixth consecutive year. It was also named to Civilianjobs.com’s annual Most Valuable Employers for Military list for the second consecutive year. Just last month, the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) presented the inaugural Extraordinary Employer Support Award to Schneider National.

Schneider National Named "Most Valuable Employer for MilitaryR" Winner

Company Represents Trucking Industry on CivilianJobs.com's Annual List for Second Consecutive Year

GREEN BAY, Wis. - (May 22, 2012) - Schneider National, Inc., one of the nation's largest truckload carriers, has been named to the CivilianJobs.com 2012 Most Valuable Employers for MilitaryR winner's list. The annual list serves to help military-experienced job seekers identify the nation's best companies for civilian careers.

"We are honored to have earned this recognition as a top employer for current and former military members," says Mike Hinz, a vice president at Schneider and a veteran of the U.S. Army and Reserve. "With their diverse skill set and outstanding work ethic, current and former military members have proven time and time again that they make outstanding associates. I believe it's our like-minded principals - safety, integrity, excellence and respect - that make Schneider National a natural choice for current and former military personnel."

This honor comes shortly after Schneider National announced its commitment to hire 650 military members throughout the country in 2012. According to Hinz, while Schneider National is hiring in all areas of its business, the greatest area of opportunity is for professional truck drivers.

The 2012 Most Valuable Employers for MilitaryR was open to all U.S.-based companies. The finalists, which were announced in February, were selected on the basis of surveys in which employers outlined their recruiting, training and retention plans that best serve military service members and veterans. Schneider was selected as a winner from this pool of finalists.

Among Schneider's many offerings for current and former military members is its Apprenticeship Program. Because of Schneider's long-standing commitment to veterans, Guard members and Reservists, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) accepted Schneider into its exclusive Apprenticeship Program. During their first year at Schneider, drivers with a military background are eligible to earn a monthly educational benefit check from the VA in addition to their paycheck - up to $1,069 each month depending on the number of years of service.

Other military-specific benefits Schneider offers include guaranteed home time for weekend drill and annual training for Guard and Reserve members as well as extended benefits and differential pay during deployment.

Werner Receives Pro Patria Award, is a Finalist for Freedom Award

Werner Enterprises was recently selected as the only large public business in Nebraska to receive the 2012 Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Pro Patria Award.

The Pro Patria Award, the highest recognition given by the state EGSR committee, is given annually to Nebraska employers who have provided exceptional support to the United States’ national defense through leadership practices and personnel policies for employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.

As one of three employers in the State of Nebraska to receive the Pro Patria Award in 2012, Werner Enterprises is qualified for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, which is a national ESGR recognition presented in Washington, D.C., to 15 employers. The Freedom Award is the highest recognition given by the Department of Defense to employers for their exceptional support of their Guard and Reserve employees.

Freedom Award nominations come directly from Guard and Reserve members or family members acting on their behalf. Bret Willard, senior manager of Driver Recruiting Resources and a 20-year Nebraska Naval Reserve member, nominated Werner for the award, which received more than 3,000 nominations nationwide. Of those nominations, 133 semifinalists were chosen, with
Werner Enterprises being one of three Nebraska employer semifinalists. The two other Nebraska employers are Southeast Community College in Lincoln and 92 West in Omaha. Thirty finalists will be chosen next month and 15 winners will be announced early summer.

Schneider National Replaces 1/3 of Fleet with Influx of 3,000 New Tractors

schneider_trucks.jpgGREEN BAY, Wis. - May 2, 2012 - Schneider National, one of the nation's largest truckload carriers, announced today that it will transform a substantial portion of its fleet by the end of 2012. The company has invested in 3,000 new 2012 and 2013 tractors. Primarily manufactured by Freightliner, the technology installed on each vehicle will take Schneider's efforts to keep its drivers safe and moving, while reducing its environmental impact, to new heights.

This year, Schneider is replacing one-third of its 10,000+ trucks with ones coming right off the production line, at a rate of 75 per week. The most significant safety upgrade is the OnGuard collision mitigation system, which assists drivers in recognizing and responding to potentially dangerous driving scenarios that could lead to a rear-end collision.

OnGuard features a forward-looking radar sensor that monitors the distance, speed and deceleration of a vehicle ahead and alerts the driver to take appropriate action through an in-cab display. "Safety first and always is our number-one core value, which means we always look for new ways to prevent crashes that could endanger our drivers and the motoring public," says Don Osterberg, senior vice president of safety and security at Schneider National. "OnGuard certainly meets that goal. Our drivers are trained to keep a safe following distance of 7 seconds on dry pavement and at least 14 seconds on wet or snowy roads, but if a situation should arise where the gap between our truck and the vehicle in front closes to less than 3.6 seconds, a warning will sound, allowing the driver to take the necessary steps to regain a safe cushion."  If the driver fails to take appropriate action, the system will deactivate the cruise control, depower the engine and even apply the brakes to avoid a collision.

Increased reliability will be another benefit Schneider will reap from the influx of new trucks. Drivers should expect fewer performance and maintenance issues, which translate into less wait time and more driving time.

On the sustainability front, the engine inside each new tractor meets the Environmental Protection Agency's 2010 emission requirements. In addition, the tractors will have aerodynamic features that reduce drag, including wheel covers. Most will have farings that have been redesigned to optimize fuel efficiency and improve mileage per gallon, as well as Predictive Cruise Control. These features strengthen Schneider's stance as an industry leader and pioneer in sustainable practices, and it further shrinks Schneider's environmental footprint. Annually, the new trucks will save almost 2 million gallons of fuel and over 22,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Drivers interested in joining Schneider should visit www.schneiderjobs.com.

Steven Aaron had a Vision that Customers Wanted a Highly Level of Service

A Real Incarnation of the American Dream

logo

Steve Aaron lived the American Dream. Starting from the bottom, he worked, took risks and built an empire. Aaron's ambition propelled him through University of Texas' business school and his drive to succeed pushed him to take risks. Shortly after college, Steve's entrepreneurial spirit got the best of him when he opened and operated his first business which included a small private fleet. Being a hands on micro manager, taught Aaron the discipline of paying attention to detail and executing with speed and precision. But Aaron had his sights set on a higher goal: to build a successful North American asset-based trucking and logistics enterprise. Today, Steve's dream has come true. Stevens Transport is recognized as the premiere trucking and logistics company.

Aaron realized that deregulation removed the barriers while creating an opportunity for those with an entrepreneurial spirit to enter the industry. In 1980 took his second financial risk and created Stevens Transport. The inaugural fleet of 13 Kenworth cabover trucks shipped meat and poultry from Texas to California while back hauling produce to the Dallas terminal market. Stevens' initial base of operations was a small office park in Mesquite, Texas with minimal tractor parking. Aaron figured that parked trucks did not generate revenue or pay bills. In Stevens first year, they turned a profit.

"Good, better,

best: don't let it

rest til your good

is better and your

better is best."

Aaron realized that to be successful, he had to have the tenacity to penetrate into the market. So he fearlessly increased his fleet to 25 tractors and 30 Utility 42' refrigerated trailers. Since 1988, his fleet has grown exponentially. Stevens Transport maintains top-of-the-line equipment, and currently has 2,500 power units with an average age of 1.6 years and 3,900 Utility 300R refrigerated trailers, each equipped with a Thermo King SB230 unit. Recently, Stevens added a new Qualcomm system, the MCP200, and will have all trucks outfitted with Electronic on Board Recording devices by June 2012.

Stevens Transport has been a family-owned and operated enterprise since it opened its doors over thirty years ago. In 1984, Aaron's oldest son Todd started working sales and envisioned the importance of using Laredo as a land bridge to strengthen Stevens' south Texas foot print, as the market was in dire need of a high caliber, cross border carrier. 10 years later, Todd started Stevens' load-to-ride intermodal program, and now serves as the Vice Chairman while still being an industry leader in sales and client procurement.

In the early 1990s, Aaron's second son, Clay, joined the team and currently serves as the company's President. Aaron's daughter Angela also made a career with Stevens, starting as a customer service representative and working her way to becoming the Vice President of Driver Resources and Administration.

There is no storm that Stevens cannot weather. Despite the recent recession, Aaron and Stevens Transport have never had a layoff in company history. Constantly focused on growth, Stevens recently consummated a 1,200 Utility trailer purchase, 600 new Kenworth power units in 2012. Needless to say, Stevens Transport is well positioned to complement its many strategic Fortune 500 partners and customer networks.
