We received the following email from NAPFTDS

ROEHL Phone Call Scam

ALERT!

Wiregrass Georgia Technical College received a phone call this morning from a gentleman named Michael Brown. He said he was a recruiter with ROEHL and needed 4 drivers. He gave his phone number as 256-265-8430. The message received from the college recruiter was 'health care AUT' in Alabama.

Mike White of Wiregrass stated that they had a 2006 graduate by the name of Michael Brown that worked for ROEHL until 2011. Mr. White called the number and the individual answered the phone as Michael Brown and it was not their student.

After confirmation with ROEHL, it was indeed a SCAM.

Thanks for the heads up Crissie

CVTA received the following email from Teresa Miller at Covenant Transport:

I just received a call from Kirk Vance with United States Truck Driving School in Denver CO. A man going by Michael Hayes has called him saying he is with Covenant Transport and asking form student information. The phone number Michael Hayes gave him was 423-855-5755. I advised Mr. Vance with USTDS this is a scam and not to give him the requested information.

Thanks for the heads up Teresa.

A scam with a twist

I just wanted to let you know that we received a call today that I think is probably a scam.  A man called and said he needed 4 drivers immediately for Roehl, said his name was Jerry Ellis and that he had more flexibility to bring someone on board than our normal recruiter.  After I hung up I tried to verify with Roehl that he was in fact an employee and was told he does not work for them.  He called me back and I asked where he was located and he said "Peachtree St., NW," I then told him that Roehl did not have him as an employee, he then said "well let me call them and have them call you."  His phone number is 404-686-6117.

Thanks for the heads up Joanie

From Dean Cochran, Director of Driver Recruiting, TransAm Trucking, Inc.

The scammer is at it again.

We have received a few calls from truck driving schools the last two days stating that a Mark Henderson is making calls claiming that he works with TransAm and is looking for students and to have them call him at 786 459 3896. Then he ask the students to wire him $250.

Please  don’t ever give his number to your students or give him your students number. It is a scam that he has been working for many years now just switching the names of the trucking company every few days.

From Marlene Dakita
Professional Truck Driver Institute

John Hancock, director of training and driver recruiting for Prime, Inc., has reported another recruiting scam.

Someone representing himself as David Palmer, director of operations for Prime, is contacting students and asking for a $400 up-front fee to be brought to Prime for a job, paid in good faith that they want a job. This scammer's voicemail at 386-212-0831 even answers to this name and title. Please stress to students that this is not Prime and that they never would operate in this manner.

The Jacksonville school has had scammer calls to 4 active enrolled students over the weekend and today. All 4 victims are staying at the Motel and the scammers seem to know their room numbers when they call. They claim to be with Covenant Transport and are asking for family member emergency numbers. One scammer gave his name as John Davis. One gave his name as Ed Jordan.

Please be on the lookout for scammer calls and do a reminder to your active students to do the same.

Notice to Carriers: DOT Supervisory Drug and Alcohol Training

In recent months, we have received numerous inquiries regarding companies using aggressive marketing tactics to sell supervisor training to employers who may be subject to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s drug and alcohol testing requirements. Please note that the FMCSA is not familiar with these companies nor the training they are offering.

49 CFR §382.603 requires supervisors of CDL drivers to take 60 minutes of training on the symptoms of alcohol abuse and another 60 minutes of training on the symptoms of controlled substances use. The purpose is to qualify supervisors for determining when reasonable suspicion testing is needed.

The FMCSA does not certify trainers or training companies, nor does it pre-approve the curriculum presented. Employers are responsible for meeting the training requirement of 49 CFR §382.603 including ensuring that any training company/entity that they purchase training from provides training in the physical, behavioral, speech, and performance indicators of probable alcohol misuse and use of controlled substances. It is up to the employer to select which training to attend, keeping in mind the aforementioned guidelines.
